hi,im thinking of getting a macbook, the white one, even the lowest in performance will beat so high over my celeron 2000ghz laptop (thats what everyone tells me) but i need to be sure this combination(reaper/mobius) will work fine in this new environment
it supposed i'd need to forget about VSTs and VSTIs? or they can be adapted easily?
thanks!

Hi there,

I use Mobius on a Mac. Rather than use it as a plug in I have it running freestanding and connect it up using JACK http://www.jackosx.com/

MIDI patchbay is handy too for getting MIDI to where you want it http://notahat.com/midi_patchbay

I'm liking Ardour as my hard disk recording app http://ardour.org

Which Macbook are you getting, what version of Mac OSX?

Jeremy

thanks for the info jeremy,im thinking of the white macbook 2'26ghz one, with the latest OS as i'd buy it new
but i want to use Mobius into Reaper,a must for me as i found it a very good DAW ,im used to it, and also got included REANINJAM,a plugin that let me go jam with ppl worlwide...in short, i want to spend as little time as posible figuring how to work with new software, that i'd sure would need to do just by switching from WIN to OS.....anyway,first i need to save the money ;)
thanks again!

I find Mac OSX is very straightforward compared to Windows.

As a speed comparison I'm using a 2.4Ghz Core Duo Macbook with 2Gb RAM which runs Mobius, Sooperlooper, Ardour, JACK, Midi Patchbay and CueMix (for 828mkII) and streaming video software.

p.s. Current Macbook does not have firewire.

hi jeremy, im now using a compaq celeron 2.0 ghz 3 meg ram laptop ,with reaper, mobius, and a few more vsts inserted into mobius output track and a few more into 2 input tracks, from Maudio ftu8r mic and line, routed to mobius input, also a few more vsts into reaper's master track, to round all things with eq and compression, and the reaninjam plugin,to go jamming online, plus streaming video software too, flash media encoder.at that point,pc is working hard to get all this running, much near its limits,i cant run firefox without having 100% cpu peaks from time to time, freezing all

so your mac runs with all that, but how much cpu its available after running those apps?
im looking to a 2nd hand macbook pro, it says its a core duo 2.0ghz with 2meg ram ,but doesnt have firewire port ,i havent heard of such model before.any idea?
will this mac beat my pc in performance with room enough?
i'd go to check the mac in the weekend anyway.thanks again

Activity monitor reports 65% to 70% idle without video streaming going. I would have thought I was using more computer resources than that.

The only sure way is to try it out.

ok, got my 1st nightmare trying to install mobius for using into reaper, theres no exe file into the downloaded file, have tried to copy the files into mobius folder to the vst plugins folder that i created and directed reaper to search there for em,but nothing, also my favourite plugin, reaninjam doesnt show in the plugins list, but weird is, it can be loaded and used by calling one of the preset templates i've made on pc and got copied into preset templates folder in the mac
clear is im not used to osx so any help would be much aprecciated.thanks!

Not sure exactly what you must be looking at with "exe" files. That's a PC thing. The whole process from scratch is:

Download mobius-install-1-42.dmg
Double click to open
Copy:
"Mobius.component" to "Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/Components"
"Mobius.vst" to "Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST"
"Mobius" (the application) to "Macintosh HD/Applications"

The folders for Components and VST should already exist. "Components" folder is where Audio Units are kept. I'm suggesting you copy Mobius application to Applications folder so it's there if you need it as a freestanding program in the future.

I've just downloaded Reaper, launched it, and it found Mobius Audio Unit and loaded it up. I don't know Reaper so I can't take it any further than that.

If "reaninjam" is a VST then copy it to Macintosh HD/Library/Audio/Plug-ins/VST with the other VSTs and see if Reaper finds it naturally.

Hope this helps

thanks jeremy, last night i managed to load mobius into reaper, dont answer me how lol,but result is that even it shows and i can configure tracks, presets and midi controll to my likings,it doesnt want to record,or do anything, its just dead
i undone all my previous steps and followed those youre talking about, but keeps just the same...uhh what can i do next?
shortest way should be calling help from some mac user friend locally....but the only one i know is just starting like me :(
thanks again for all your help ,i dont lose hope so easily :)

I can't be much help with the AU version as I always use Mobius freestanding, even less in Reaper. I'm trying to think what might be different from PC....

Starting from the beginning, have you confirmed your audio interface is working as both an input and output device? If in doubt read sections on apple.com about "aggregate device".

Once that's confirmed you'll need to check Reaper preferences and select your audio interface there. When I look at Reaper on my Mac it has no device selected as the default and I have to choose there.

Then you have audio into Reaper and how it gets routed to Mobius should be similar of the same as on PC I would think.

I'm not sure what the problem is but the usual reason for
Mobius being "dead" is that audio isn't streaming into it. Some hosts
like Bidule and Ableton are always "on", audio is always flowing from the
connected inputs.

Most tapedeck-oriented DAWs need to have the track "armed"
for recording before audio flows through. It's been awhile since I used
reaper check to see if they have some kind of record-ready-but-paused
mode.
