View Full Version : Share your script libraries?

Hello everyone,
I have programmed in the past (starting with BASIC in sixth grade with my Tandy Color Computer, 4K of RAM!), but haven't done it in a while besides some MS Word Macros. Lately, I'm trying to shorten my learning curve on Mobius scripting.
I'm sure some of you have developed scripts for various live performance applications. Is there a way for users to post their script "library" on this site, so that others can download and steal (er, i mean, "borrow") scripts that they find useful? Rather than posting lots of threads about specific topics, I would love to download a whole library of scripts, play with them, tweak them, and learn from them for my own vocal looping application.
I suppose people could just attach them to a post on this thread, perhaps combining their scripts in a single text file?
Waiting eagerly. . .

We have no indexed script library in association to this forum, but maybe that is not a bad thing after all? I mean, quite often a shared script needs some discussion to make sense, if the script is a bit inventive. So I'm thinking that posting scripts with the *code* formatting inside plain forum posts would be excellent. Everyone can find the script if it is posted under an appropriate headline/subject and it comes with a lot of discussion to give its context.
Example:
A *code* formatted script in a post looks like
!8ths Per Cycle 12
set 8thsPerCycle 12
set 8thsPerCycle $save8thsPerCycle
And for this particular script it makes great sense to read the comment that you may benefit from assigning this script to the same MIDI event for all tracks, rather than a global assignment that affects the currently selected track. This is done in the MIDI Control window and you simply chose the tracks (1 to 8) instead of "Global" in the Scope menu.
Now, why is that good? Because changing the parameter "8ths Per Cycle" while looping live has all to do with the time measure you intend to play in (or with creating poly rhythmic slices in loops). With the Track Scope, rather than the Global Scope, your MIDI controller will work the "8ths Per Cycle" setting for all tracks. This means if you cut and slice four loops in one go you will know what you are doing to the other three loops that are not on the currently selected track. There won't be any risk that you "forget" one track at an odd "8ths Per Cycle" setting when leaving it (which might create problems later in your performance). It means less alternative tools to confuse you in favor of one much more powerful tool that you can actually master - and that's what we are looking for when learning to perform without boring the audience.
Yes, I'm inclined to have short scripts be included as code sections in normal forum posts. Part of the reason is that I don't have a good way for people to upload files. The forum software doesn't really support a files area outside of
posts. I've been experimenting with a file upload widget on the
circularlabs.com home page, but it isn't protected by authentication and I'm
worried about it becoming another spam magnet so I may take that down.
We have an older scripts area in the files section of the Yahoo group:
groups.yahoo.com/group/zonemobius
There is still some good stuff there but a lot of it is old and we've been
having reports of some files no longer working.
What I would like to do when I have time is pull down everything from the Yahoo group and some of the scripts posted in the forum, clean them up a bit, test them, and start maintaining a library as part of the standard Mobius installation so people have something to look at right away.
As people post new scripts to the forum, I may pull some of them into
the installation if they look generally useful. We'll see how it goes, this is the one thing I miss most about the Yahoo group, a nice protected organized
file upload area.

Yeah, I guess short scripts (i.e. three-liners) can be posted with the code brackets very elegantly in the "Tips & Tricks" section.
like this
But imo, we really need a code library like in Yahoo files - maybe some open source/php tools possible? Basic file management shouldn't be too tricky.

Yeah I hate to butt in here but I'm a total no-hoper when it comes to script writing and I'm finding it very difficult to make any scripts work.
A library would be soooo helpful - for example I can't even figure out how to write a script that turns the output to '0'... which should be easy?
The yahoo group isn't much help coz when you type in "scripts" in the search you get 2735 results...
Any good souls out there feel like helping me I would be eternally gratefull....
